"Nothing has a greater impact on space than lighting"

Picture

Lighting is one of the most important elements of good design.  Yet many homes are either under-lit, or resemble an airport landing runway.  The right lighting can make or break any design.  Two major components to good lighting are it’s form and it’s function.  Most of us tend to focus on the form aspect of lighting choosing fixtures for their appearance while not taking into consideration how they are to be used.

Our homes have become our sanctuary, with many more of our daily needs being fulfilled there.  Not only has it become our gathering place for friends and family, millions more currently work from home and many young families are opting for home schooling their children. This broad array of uses makes essential proper lighting in order to making them both functional and enjoyable.

"Light has the power to not only illuminate what we see,
but influence how we see it."

LIGHTING IS ABOUT MORE THAN STYLE….IT’S ABOUT YOUR LIFESTYLE !

All the new technologies of the past decade have increased lighting’s importance.  The new media rooms and even the new electronic control systems have certainly impacted the way many of us use our homes.

Many people fall into the trap of overusing table lamps to light a room.  Table lamps are decorative fixtures which can double as task lights when needed.  But they shouldn't be used to light an entire room on their own.  They are not a good source of ambient light.  A better approach is to use a technique called light layering, where several light sources are blended together to create a warm inviting and more functional space.

Task lighting is another important element in a good lighting design, however the best source of task lighting does not come exclusively from the ceiling as it may reflect glare directly into your eyes causing eye fatigue.

Recessed lighting has become the “go to” choice of residential lighting for home builders, architects, many designers and of course homeowners looking to update their homes.  When recessed down lighting is used exclusively, rooms appear smaller and are filled with glare and shadows which consequently appear on the faces of those in the room.  Not only does this look bad, it also makes for a very uncomfortable feeling in the room. There are many types of recessed luminaries on the market today and choosing the correct recessed light fixture for your space is as critical as incorporating additional layers of light.

A professional lighting designer will always consider both the color temperature as well as the color rendering of any light source while specifying your lighting. These are two of the most critical aspects that come into play when designing the lighting in your home.
